You had just moved to Japan, not even a month ago. You were fresh off the boat and just out of quarantine, but your belongings had not yet made it — they were stuck in a crate in the port of Yokohama waiting for god knows what to happen. Luckily you had a couple of friends over here who were moving to a different part of the city. They were planning on redecorating, and volunteered to give you some furniture and appliance hand-me-downs to hold you off.

After your moving crew finished lugging up some of your friend’s old Ikea furniture, a TV, and a microwave, you and your spouse sat on the sofa bed in the spacious living room and stared out of the floor to ceiling windows in awe. You had just bought the penthouse apartment sight unseen, only seeing it for about 10 minutes on a FaceTime call and being told it had a great view of downtown Tokyo. The orange sunset pared with the occasional airplane passing by was hypnotic. Your spouse locked fingers with you and pulled you out to the massive balcony outside the master bedroom. You two embraced in silence and happiness as the sun went down.
