Moving to Tokyo from outside Japan--particularly for the first time and particularly with young children--can be a daunting task. Along with figuring out the school situation, determining where to live is often of foremost concern. While the recent devaluation of the Japanese yen vs. the USD has made Tokyo real estate somewhat more affordable, lately prices have been edging higher and living spaces that are large enough for what you may be accustomed are not always easy to find. Having moved across the ocean to the Tokyo metropolitan area with my family on 3 separate occasions, my wife and I came to appreciate the kind of personal approach like Blackship provides. Most expats only have a limited period during which to see multiple properties, and by the end of the day it is often difficult to remember which is which. There is also the anxiety of being fearful that you will run out of the allotted time in a temporary extended stay hotel before finding an acceptable rental property. To save time and ensure the greatest degree of satisfaction after moving in, spend time with your Blackship representative in advance to let them ask you all sorts of questions. By doing their homework ahead of time, Blackship will match your needs to a short list of properties. Like a search for a suitable rental property anywhere, be prepared to compromise at least a little. By working closely with Blackship you will, however, find that you will be presented with multiple locations that require few trade-offs. When looking for new a place in Tokyo recently, I was recommended to go through Blackship by a friend. After getting in touch, Amy was quick to respond and did an excellent job of narrowing down my research requirements to find me a new apartment in my preferred area of Ebisu.Even with some of the more laborious 'red tape' issues along the way, she bent over backwards to make my experience as smooth as possible and because she speaks fluent Japanese and English, nothing was every lost in translation, which kept the amount of unnecessary emails down to a minimum.Would highly recommend to any expats looking for a new place to live in Tokyo!
