Overview

Located in the northern section of Minato Ward, Toranomon has been known as the epicenter of Japan’s politics and economy until recently. Thanks to the Azabudai project, which endeavors to build residential spaces, hotels, and an international school, Toranomon is set to become the most up and coming area in central Tokyo. The concept of the project is ‘Modern urban Village’ which will add a bit more color and charm to the city. For those looking for both the charms of towering skyscrapers in addition to a family-friendly atmosphere, this may become the neighborhood for you.

Food and Drink

Due to the abundance of office complexes, there are plenty of food options in the area. Toranomon Yokocho, a trendy food court featuring 26 restaurants with a variety of international cuisine, is a great place to start. High-end options in the area include Aragawa, which serves premium charcoal-grilled steaks, and Scarpetta, a New York-based award-winning Italian restaurant that just opened its first Japan branch in October.

If you’re a vegetarian looking for a luxury meal, Shojin Ryori Daigo is a two-star Michelin restaurant offering plant-based, vegetarian meals traditionally eaten by monks. There are plenty of options for casual meals at Napoli Sta’Ca, a pizzeria near Kamiyacho Station, and Bistro Chikara, a French bistro & wine bar behind Atago Shrine.

Art & Culture

Toranomon is a surprisingly great place for art and cultural attractions. Senoku Hakukokan Tokyo preserves and exhibits the works of art collected by the Sumitomo family. Tomo Museum of Art has a collection of contemporary ceramics, and Okura Museum of Art is Japan’s first private museum.

Toranomon is also home to Suntory Hall, a classical concert hall.On the more religious side, Atago Shrine built-in 1603 is known for its ‘staircase to success’ which leads to the shrine precinct. You can also walk down to Zojoji Temple, built by a disciple of the famous monk Kukai in the 9th century, for a bit of a history lesson.

For those with young children, the Minato Science Museum may be a great option. It has a planetarium and hosts kid-friendly workshops with themes based around ‘science living in the city’. NHK Museum of Broadcasting and the Meteorological Science Museum are great options as well.

Parks

Toranomon is home to some lovely parks such as Shiba park and Hibiya park. Shiba Park, adjacent to Tokyo Tower, not only has an expansive grass field for picnics, but also a sports facility including tennis courts and a baseball field.

You can also walk over to Hamarikyu Garden, which is known for its traditionally styled garden amidst the backdrop of skyscrapers.

Transportation

Trains: Toranomon is connected through two major subway: Ginza and Hibiya lines.

Taxis: Taxis are easy to hail in Toranomon, as the area is heavily populated with office workers and residents alike.
