Yokohama Tops 2024’s Most Desirable Places to Live

By Yasuharu Matsuno, Last Updated On June 16, 2024

The “SUUMO 2024 Most Desirable Places to Live” ranking has been released, showing a significant shift in preferences among residents in the Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, and Ibaraki Prefectures. Remarkably, the top two spots are now held by cities outside of Tokyo. This year, Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture has been crowned the most desirable place to live across all genders and ages, with significant support from families with children.

Key Highlights of the 2024 Rankings

  1. Yokohama, Kanagawa: Yokohama has not only maintained its position at the top but also increased its score, solidifying its status as the most desirable place to live for the seventh consecutive year.
  2. Omiya, Saitama: Surpassing the popular Tokyo district of Kichijoji, Omiya has risen to the second position. This shift indicates a growing preference for areas outside central Tokyo.
  3. Kichijoji, Tokyo: Once a favorite, Kichijoji has now moved to the third spot.
  4. Ebisu, Tokyo: Retaining its charm, Ebisu remains a favorite, holding steady at fourth place.
  5. Shinagawa, Tokyo: Making a comeback into the top 10, Shinagawa shows renewed interest among residents.

Yokohama’s Family-Friendly Initiatives

Yokohama’s enhanced child-rearing support has played a crucial role in its top ranking. The city’s mid-term plan, “Yokohama City Mid-term Plan 2022-2025,” introduced the strategy “Yokohama, a City Where You Want to Raise Children,” leading to various supportive measures:

  • Free Medical Care: Since August 2023, medical care has been free for children up to junior high school.
  • Childcare Coupons: From June 2023, new initiatives like “First Time Childcare Coupons” and “Yokohama Childcare Support System Coupons” have been introduced, providing free and subsidized childcare services.
  • Comprehensive Childcare Support: The city is focusing on easing the burden on parents with various measures like after-school care and planned midday meal services during school holidays starting July 2024.
  • Digital Support: A new “Childcare Support Site and App” is set to launch in June 2024, simplifying administrative procedures and providing essential information for parents.

These initiatives have significantly boosted Yokohama’s appeal among young families, making it a preferred destination for raising children.

Yamashita Park: A scenic waterfront park featuring expansive green lawns, flower beds, a fountain, and views of Yokohama Bay, making it a popular spot for relaxation and strolls.

Yokohama’s Multi-Faceted Appeal

Beyond its family-friendly initiatives, Yokohama boasts an exceptional living environment with its coastal location, numerous parks, and cultural attractions. The city has seen several new developments enhancing its appeal:

  • JR Yokohama Tower: Opened in June 2020, it includes commercial spaces, cinemas, and event venues with stunning views of Yokohama Bay.
  • Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse: Renovated in December 2022, it now features 66 shops and an expanded food court.
  • CeeU YOKOHAMA: Opening in December 2023, this new complex includes a supermarket, specialty stores, clinics, and relaxation facilities.
Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (Renovated December 2022): Under the new concept “BRND NEW ‘GATE’,” it underwent its first major renovation since opening, now hosting 66 shops, including 25 new stores, and an expanded food court.

Economic and Lifestyle Factors

Yokohama is also becoming an attractive place to work, with many companies moving their headquarters to the city. Notable companies include Isuzu Motors, Bosch, and various electronics manufacturers like Kyocera and Sony. The city’s excellent access to central Tokyo and Haneda Airport, along with a large talent pool from local universities, further enhances its appeal.

JR Yokohama Tower (Opened June 2020): Features two commercial facilities, a cinema, and an atrium hosting events like talk shows. The rooftop “Umisora Deck” offers panoramic views of Yokohama Port and Yokohama Bay Bridge.

Conclusion

The 2024 rankings reflect a significant shift in residential preferences, with Yokohama emerging as the top choice over central Tokyo areas. The appeal of Yokohama lies in their comprehensive family support, economic opportunities, and enhanced quality of life.
